What kind of animals does exotic pet insurance cover?

Coverage for cats and dogs is commonplace, but what about other animal family members?

Exotic pet insurance might sound like it’s intended for animals such as tigers or pythons, but it’s actually the type of policy intended for common animals aside from dogs and cats.

Many people keep animals such as birds and rodents

By purchasing exotic pet insurance, animal owners can carry the same type of veterinary care coverage enjoyed by dogs and cats. This means that owners will have financial protection in case that animal is unexpectedly sick or injured.  In many cases, this means that owners won’t need to choose between their beloved animal family members and their financial wellbeing.

Plans will usually cover the types of care an animal requires in case of accident or illness, such as lab work, X-rays, and vet exam fees.  This coverage is unlike the type of health plans that cover humans, in that they will usually require that the vet bill be paid and then reimbursed later on after a claim has been made.

What types of animals are covered by exotic pet insurance?

People keep all kinds of animals in their homes. They can include everything from small mammals to reptiles, amphibians and birds, among others.  Many of them – assuming they are legal animals to own and keep at home – can be covered by an exotic pet insurance policy.

Examples of these animals often include:

  • Frogs and toads
  • Birds
  • Bearded dragons
  • Chameleons
  • Ferrets
  • Chinchillas
  • Goats
  • Gerbils
  • Mice
  • Rabbits
  • Hamsters
  • Rats
  • Guinea pigs
  • Suar gliders
  • Iguanas
  • Snakes
  • Tortoises/turtles
No standard policy

As is the case with coverage for cats and dogs, there is no single standard that defines what you can expect from all policies. Therefore, it’s best to compare options to be sure you’re getting the coverage you want for your animal and for the best price.

Among the types of coverage that are often included in this type of policy can be:

  • Chronic illness
  • Accidental injury
  • Hereditary health issues
  • Common illnesses
  • Lab work
  • Hospitalization
  • Serious illness

It’s important to note that there can sometimes be add-ons available for preventive care and other optional wellness coverage types.  If your animal is at particular risk of a certain condition, this can sometimes be covered as an add-on.  Still, it’s very important to recognize that most policies will exclude preexisting conditions.
